Song We Like: Lipstick by Headcase The Band

We love some country songs, easy pace, rambling, slightly falling apart and then somehow pulling it all back together, like a night out at the local dive bar. Great vocals. The singer is another expression of this jam, ruminating over a lover, while the band finds new pockets of fun to musically explore.

Song We Like: Inside Out by Moniker

,

The underground music world is funky – especially the groove of Moniker. These guys know how to write a song and they know how to write a great catchy chorus. Oh, it turns you inside out. It’s also such a nice arrangement and there’s a brain behind the writing of this song. The singer has a rich and sleepy voice – very cool and above it all.

Song We Like: When The Reaper Comes by Ugly Runner

Ugly Runner is taking the Asheville underground music scene by storm. To cool for their own good – which means they’ll probably be doing fine when The Reaper Comes. Behind the distortion and garage rock attitude this is some classic blues, maybe even classic gospel. Oh this shit is going to go down – but not yet, not until I finish my cigarette.

Song We Like: FLATLINE LUV by BBQT

Call the ambulance – because I need that FLATLINE LUV. (Yeah all song titles are ALL IN CAPS for BBQT – that’s just the way they roll.) Great bass and drums – some claps too – and building up the intensity and then dropping it back into the groove again. She’s fabulous. Must be Joan Jett’s daughter or something…

Song We Like: Clementine by Platonic Bondage

Oh my darling, Clementine – here’s an updating in the best most raucous punk rock manner. Clementine is still lost and we’re still missing her – but now she’s pined for through a wave of distorted guitars and the most badass vocals ever.

Song We Like: Message to My Love (Supreme) by Axxa/Abraxas

I saw the best minds of my generation destroyed by madness, starving, hysterical, naked… Nah – the best minds of the generation, of the Asheville underground music generation, are in Axxa/Abraxas – Sophie, Eli, Benito, Emma – and Ben. I love the bass riff that keeps this song on the rails, while the rest of the band explores this post psychedelic soundscape. Great vocals. Featured on our #75 podcast at www.hlycrp.com.

Song We Like: Hello Music by Cherie and Renno

I strongly recommend that you listen to this driving around in your car. The song has a sick groove and you need to have the bass pumping. This is my idea of gangster gypsy kletzmer music. Works both for your grandparents at a wedding/family celebration – and for being a bad ass rolling down your street. Cinnamon says – it’s the greatest thing I heard in my life.
