Song We Like: I Piss On You by Hotdoggrrrl & The Sesame Buns

So glad this band has come into my life. Fantastic garage rock, classic rock-n-roll, fronted by this wonderful singer – all attitude and crassness and depraved sexual shenanigans. I am laughing and also very nervous when I listen to this band. This is an artist who is fearless and has truly stepped off the ledge and is floating in the air. Wanna hear us talk about this song? – Featured on our #82 podcast at www.hlycrp.com.

Song We Like: Airborne by Wussy

Yup – I’ve listened to this a hundred times this week alone. There’s something so intimate in the male/female vocals – this conversation about miscommunication and mixed signals that leads to a break up. The woman’s voice is just the truth. I believe everything she sings. Wanna hear us talk about this song? – Featured on our #82 podcast at www.hlycrp.com.

Song We Like: Shot Me Down by The Drain Outs

So fun. Some shagadelic updating of 1950s/1960s surf pop. Like if Austin Powers was fronting The Strokes. We at Holy Crap Records Podcast love it when underground bands lean into dance music. So catchy. It’s a mystery why this song isn’t everywhere. Girls are screaming and men are peeing their pants with excitement! Song We Like: No Justice by Federale

It’s so refreshing when an underground band ventures into new territory and absolutely creates music of such epic beauty. Federale ride into the wide open spaces of the spaghetti western and lonesome heartbreak. The voice is as rich and full of honey as any crooner from the 1940s and 1950s, and the composition is restrained and gorgeously evocative. Wanna hear us talk about this song? – Featured on our #82 podcast at www.hlycrp.com.

Ep 83 – `Cinnamon’s Birthday’ FEAT: Ruby the Hatchet, Lavender Blue, Dangerous Goods, Steve Hill, Pale Lips

Song We Like: Chronic by Venus As A Boy

This beauty starts as prickly post punk, with all sharp angles and pounding vocal-less chorus, and then it morphs, has a quick drum flourish, picks up speed, and falls back into a half-paced shaggy Pavement tune. It has more ideas than most bands show in a full album, all with intensity and that cold cool soul which fascinates me.

Song We Like: Foaming At The Mouth by Reverend Bro Diddley and the Hips

“I’m foaming at the mouth for you” – the ultimate lovey statement that you want to sing to your sweetie from the stage. Here it is sung as a drunken all-men’s chorus. Nothing makes me happier that this. Oh man, I bet it works all the time. I hope that one day I wake up with a phrase this cool in my head. This song is loud, fun and catchy as hell.

Song We Like: Indents of Dice by Sang Sarah

I’ve been friends with Jenna Duvall and Ian Duvall for a couple of years, through being a fan of their band. So I was eagerly awaiting their latest release. This song blew away all expectations. Sang Sarah plays in this really rich musical space of the intersection of metal, punk, and goth. The last time I saw them live I was reminded of The Cult during their “She Sells Sanctuary” phase. “Indents of Dice” is totally fresh and new – atmospheric, dramatic, cinematic, massive canvas, yet restrained, and hauntingly beautiful.

Song We Like: Man With A Knife by Toeheads

This is such a wonderful delicious mess – in all its splendor. “Man With A Knife” has a wonderful attitude – and by wonderful I mean truly crappy. Just the worst attitude ever. The garage rock guitar is distorted and playing this minimalist riff. The voice – also distorted – is screaming about a man with a knife? The drummer is pulverizing the hell out of his set. Do they have it! Hell yes! Do I know what this means? Not at all. Am I in love? Yeah – I love this so very much.
