Song We Like: Chronic by Venus As A Boy
Songs We LikeThis beauty starts as prickly post punk, with all sharp angles and pounding vocal-less chorus, and then it morphs, has a quick drum flourish, picks up speed, and falls back into a half-paced shaggy Pavement tune. It has more ideas than most bands show in a full album, all with intensity and that cold cool soul which fascinates me.

Song We Like: Foaming At The Mouth by Reverend Bro Diddley and the Hips
Songs We Like“I’m foaming at the mouth for you” – the ultimate lovey statement that you want to sing to your sweetie from the stage. Here it is sung as a drunken all-men’s chorus. Nothing makes me happier that this. Oh man, I bet it works all the time. I hope that one day I wake up with a phrase this cool in my head. This song is loud, fun and catchy as hell.

Song We Like: Indents of Dice by Sang Sarah
Songs We LikeI’ve been friends with Jenna Duvall and Ian Duvall for a couple of years, through being a fan of their band. So I was eagerly awaiting their latest release. This song blew away all expectations. Sang Sarah plays in this really rich musical space of the intersection of metal, punk, and goth. The last time I saw them live I was reminded of The Cult during their “She Sells Sanctuary” phase. “Indents of Dice” is totally fresh and new – atmospheric, dramatic, cinematic, massive canvas, yet restrained, and hauntingly beautiful.

Song We Like: Man With A Knife by Toeheads
Songs We LikeThis is such a wonderful delicious mess – in all its splendor. “Man With A Knife” has a wonderful attitude – and by wonderful I mean truly crappy. Just the worst attitude ever. The garage rock guitar is distorted and playing this minimalist riff. The voice – also distorted – is screaming about a man with a knife? The drummer is pulverizing the hell out of his set. Do they have it! Hell yes! Do I know what this means? Not at all. Am I in love? Yeah – I love this so very much.

Song We Like: Tangerine by The Swells
Songs We LikeI’m pretty sure they just created the best psyche rock song since the Brian Jonestown Massacre. It sounds so nasty and dirty and full of madness. I love the waves of music. I love the soundscape. Beneath all the fuzz and strangeness this is so catchy and poppy. It couldn’t be a better pop song – be my tangerine! Be my tangerine!

Song We Like: Kudis by SKUX
Songs We LikeThe perfect pop punk song. Razor-sharp drumming and gorgeous hypnotic fuzzed out guitars. The chorus is a shouted ode to kudis. Plus, I love all these elements, and then the band adds another whole catchy segment as the end piece.Wanna hear us talk about this song? – Featured on our #81 podcast at www.hlycrp.com.
Song We Like: When You by The Audiots
Songs We Like“When You” by The Audiots is a funkier, dancier version of The Strokes – which is a very very good thing. Instead of four-on-the-floor drumming we have these groovier and funkier rhythms. It is melodically excellent and a radio ready hit. Song We Like: Mission on Uranus by The Bahareebas
Songs We LikeProbably this Swiss band, The Bahareebas, don’t live anywhere near the beach, let alone get much time for surfing. But surf rock is in their blood – it is their blood. This is super tight and precise and also fun and funky. This song breaks the “no instrumental” rule – because it is soooo good. Mission on Yur Anus. From the premier surf band of Zurich.Wanna hear us talk about this song? – Featured on our #81 podcast at www.hlycrp.com.
Song We Like: Too Much by Bad Bangs
Songs We LikeMust be something about the Melbourne scene. They just send me so many great shaggy garage rockers. This is unhurried fun. The singer is the epitome of cool and the bass keeps this train bumping down the track. I want to steal the main melody line. Plus they have this super catchy synth/keyboard piece hooking into the second half of the song. The cherry on the cake!
